SPRITE: Sheffield Partnership for Rivers in Town Environments
This short video describes the work of the SPRITE project, including an introduction to 'Mayfly in the Classroom' and the work of the Wild Trout Trust, including practical work on the River Colne, another Trout in the Town project.
Formed specifically as a branch of the Trout in The Town project, this Sheffield group has been supported by funding from the Esmée Fairbairn foundation, Local Government, their own independent fundraising and generous donations from local businesses such as Gripple.
The Wild Trout Trust has supported the organisation and structuring of the group through advice as well as developing and trialling several initiatives that include the WTT’s Mayfly in the Classroom, Tenkara in the Town and friendly angling competitions for fisheries monitoring. Ongoing guidance on activities and future partnerships and initiatives are also provided by the WTT.
The group holds regular social and working party events that range from litter clean ups, through fly tying evenings to bird and bat box installation as well as invasive plant control work and native flora planting. An important campaigning role has been highlighted by recent proposed or enacted interventions into the river corridor.
